Opening: Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond was suffering in the rear seat of a police car scorching towards Bath along the Keynesham bypass with the headlamps on full beam, blue light pulsing and siren wailing.

The end was a bit of a pizzle, however Lovesey had covered this in the storyline by stating that a locked-room puzzle was only mentally captivating whilst it remained unsolved, and usually, the denoument was rather boring.

Such was the case here. And the (view spoiler) other thread of the story was unsatisfactory.
