** spoiler alert ** I sense a fair amount of neo-platonic thought running through here and also puts me in mind of works by the much later Iris Murdoch. This is an outstanding tale of learning curves, sadistic manipulation and Zionist sympathy in an age where European hatred of the Jews was well on the rise again (it was only three decades before The Protocols of the Elders of Zion were circulated).
This particular BBC production is a masterful serving and in no way will it stop me from looking for the paper version, it has whetted my appetite further.
