Whoever had this copy first did not read further than page 177 as it's virgin from that point.

Brazil next - the lovely Laura.

You know, history is such a plot spoiler. Oh! and titles of course, don't forget plot spoiling titles; even though Krishnapur is a fictional town this is pure history with some pretty good nose-thumbing at the pompous colonialists. The writing is a pure delight and the atmosphere is dread electric with anticipation. All the indications that 'there may be trouble ahead' (and there are many clues in full view) are ignored by the Blustering British Buffoons - who will be known as BBB forthwith in this review.

...The Collector remembered something he had read once... a Sanskrit poem describing how, in an overwhelmingly hot season, the cobra lay under the peacock's wing and the frog reclined beneath the hood of the cobra. In this way are the different personalities brought together under siege in the Krishnapur cantonment. The scope of discussion within this novel is breathtaking and Farrell manages to make us laugh at the most disturbing events; so much to chew over after the last page is read.
