Dedication: For Candice

Quote: 'Ours was the marsh country...' Great Expectations

Opening: 'And don't forget,' my father would say, as if he expected me at any moment to up and leave to seek my fortune in the wide world, 'whatever you learn about people, however bad they turn out, each one of them has a heart, and each one of them was once a tiny baby sucking his mother's milk...'

Children, Francis Fukuyama published The End of History and the Last Man in 1992, and yet Swift showcases an ongoing discussion between Crick, the history master, and Price, the precocious student right back in 1983.

Now I don't precisely buy into Fukuyama's world view, however Swift has written a work of genius here...

...read, put the book down, ponder, pick up, read a few lines...

...in rotation.

Crick debates revolution as a wheel - it looks as if it is going forward but look at the kick back after that forward thrust. Like Schrödinger's cat, history goes in more than one direction, simultaneously.

#42. TBR BUSTING 2013

Will have to hunt that down - or will that diminish the 6* glow from the writing?
