Opening: 'There's always some clever beggar thinks he can get away with murder,' said Amos Atherton, his voice sharp with the self-justification of the almost fooled.
blurb: When reporter Laura Ackroyd is sent to Arnedale to work on a local paper, she senses that all is not well in the town. She discovers a web of local corruption relating to land deals and a link to the firm of estate agents for whom a recently murdered young woman worked for.
Philip Larkin - This Be The Verse
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.
Death of an estate agent? - what's not to love here. heh!
Bog standard mystery with some nice touches. Would not turn down another in the series but wouldn't go out of my way to find one.
