The Mourning Vessels by Peter Luther

The Mourning Vessels - Peter Luther

Gothic Tenby

Tenby is a town steeped in ancient history surrounded by an imposing stone wall, built in the 13th century.

Description: The wood will never scratch, the iron never tarnish, for this will be the vessel that will hold you. Oh death, where is thy sting? Oh grave, where is thy victory? The trustees of a Victorian scientific society are visiting the recently bereaved, offering to 'solve' their grief. They have an unhealthy interest in any unusual object coveted by the deceased. An antique typewriter belonging to Ellen's late father has been claimed by the trustees under his will, but it's missing and someone is using it to send her messages. The coded messages carry knowledge only her father could own. They tell of secrets only the dead can unlock.

Opening: "You'll find something," had been the promise that accompanied Ellen as she inspected and itemised the very corners of her late father's townhouse. "You'll find something and you'll grieve."

BLURBS: "The Mourning Vessels" is the first of a series of novels concerning an aesthetic Welsh churchman tasked with destroying temples of a Satanic coven. In this novel the trustees of an old scientific society are visiting the recently bereaved, offering to 'solve' their grief. They have an unhealthy interest in any unusual object coveted by the deceased.

A signed first edition giftee. The cover is Miss Scarlet from a luxury handmade Cluedo set - neat.

Over-written for what it was, Mourning Vessels was still enjoyable, especially when things finally got moving after page ~270. It helped things along enormously that when I first encountered Honeyman, a picture of Ruebeus Hagrid instantly came to mind, yes, Hagrid's face on a Rev. Green plinth. (If I was any good at photoshop I would make that image.)
